I follow COTs to gauge the degree of spec exposure to a trade, get the flavor of the month. Typically I like to be ahead of their ramp ups, and be careful when they are overcommitted. As a short term timing tool, COTs are not especially meaningful. However, right now in this kind of market, I'm finding few if any short term indicators that are working. Part of this though is because of the influence of leveraged spec traders. Therefore, in the context of this market, the COTs is an important "gauge tool".
