Income tax in China-- 14% on average for higher income, for those who earn 1500 Yuan/month is lower, and 20% tax for bank savings. and there is NO tax return in China. And plenty of people who has power and luck have more than 1 apartment and they usually rent out the extra apartments. And according to the tax law, the rent income should pay 5% tax (used to be 20%-50%). But even if with this 5%, few people voluntarily surrender the money<g>, and the gov. has NO resource to inforce the law<g>

Hotels still have to use 2-3 shifts since they open around the clock. Only those who employ regular white/blue collar workers can get away with asking workers to work 1-2 hrs more a day, and occasionally on weekend. The way they do this is pretty smart, to assign an unusual amount of job for individuals that simply cannot be done in 8 hrs.

insurance -- it depends. Some companies, as a benefit, buy employment and health insurance for their employees, but many have to buy themselves. Some cities, like ShenZhen, force all bigger employers to have to buy unemployment insurance for their employees, but certainly not all. But because of a much bigger pool, so all kinds of insurances, health or unemloyment, are affordable for individuals as long as you have a job, even a relatively low pay job. Unlike some insurance (like health insurance) in the US, price is out of reach for some low pay workers.
