Quick, hopefully basic, question.

Brother in law called me in a panic. Apparently WIN XP was causing problems for him. As he related to me blue screens etc... In the past he always inserted the WIN XP disk and did a repair on the installation. This time that would not even work, so he says he re-installed it.

Now the computer boots up, but when he hits the start button, no programs show up. He is worried he lost everything. He is going to call me this afternoon when he is back at his computer and we are going to see if he lost everything, or if it is all there, but just not on the start menu.

Can anyone tell me, what does a re-install of WIN XP do? Does it reformat and reload, or does it just replace the WIN XP files?

Am I looking at a nightmare phone call?

Thanks
-Scott
