Wal-Mart's new job and wage structure, created with the assistance of an outside consulting firm, has seven job classifications, up from four. Pay scales in the future will be determined by knowledge, problem-solving skills and accountability requirements, as well as by market rates.

Workers will be receive fixed annual raises: 40 cents an hour for meeting expectations and 55 cents an hour for exceeding expectations. Hourly workers presently receive raises of either 4% or 5%, respectively, for such evaluations. As a result, employees who make more than $10 an hour and meet expectations and those making more than $11 an hour and exceeding expectations will receive smaller annual raises than they did under the old system.

Wal-Mart has 1.3 million U.S. workers, who earn an average of $9.65 an hour, according to the company. Wal-Mart declined to say how much the pay increases will affect its overall payroll, but said the changes were already factored into the year's budget and wouldn't have an impact on earnings.
