Ted, Why can't the Japanese provide non military support like they were planning to do in Iraq.....or are doing? I can't remember if they actually made it there.

I forget as well ... Japan and Korea was counted by Bush as two of our supporters in Iraq, but I think all they provide so far is a few (i.e. one or two hundred?) non-combat personnel. That in itself, though, is enough to count as support, both to the war supporters and the war opponents.

I don't know what happened to the very controversial move by President Roh to send some Korean active-duty personnel to Iraq.

As for the Taiwanese, do they really think they stand a chance if China decides to go after them?

Not while America stands in the way. It should be obvious: The People's army really is heavy on manpower but short on hardware and technology. I think even China has decided that trying to take Taiwan by force would be much more costly than it's worth. Instead, they'll just resort to words and saber-rattling, which doesn't cost much except diplomatically.

China could easily destroy them with nukes and hit Taiwan pretty hard with bombs and missiles, but an actual invasion would be very difficult. At this point it probably would not succeed even if the US didn't intervene. China could take Qumoy and Matsu (which are within artillery range of the mainland), but they don't really have an the ability to move an invasion force across the ocean and then make an opposed amphibious landing. That could change eventually...
