Well, Michael, thanks for sharing your experiences. You appear to be a much more dedicated social activist than I. I am still one of those Henry David Thoreau types who tends to believe that every one should derive his energies from his own separate Walden Pond.

I do contribute to my church which sponsors many assistance programs for the poor, the homeless, the hungry and the dispossessed. But I seem to always fall back on that old saw: give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish an he can feed himself forever.

Yes, it is a simplification, and we do need the safety nets provided by enlightened governmental organizations and services. But man must avoid at all costs becoming dependent on his government and government must avoid at all costs encouraging man to become dependent on its services.
