The first version was true. Other meanings of the term where not, the 2nd version that I listed was not only false but ridiculous.

Well, version number two was the justification for our huge sacrifice in Vietnam. It's good that you realize that it was "ridiculous", as other more recent "justications" have been.

The salient point is that "theories" are often used for military operation that don't make any common sense. Vietnam and Iraq are both good examples.
