Your not very specific about what you see as the closest the US got to pure capitalism, what was the disaster, or even how you would define pure capitalism.

If your talking about the great depression, it did not happen at a time of near pure capitalism, and the governmental actions that helped to bring it about where not exactly actions of the free market.
