Actually it is a joke when people say that we as a country are a laughing stock. That is not the case. The criticisms are for members of the administration, and in no way are making all of us laughing stocks in the world as you wrote.

I think people will become overly sentimental about Reagan and that will carry over to Bush and the republican party

Reagan took much criticism for his hard stance with Russia, just as Bush is with Iraq - it took time, but Reagan was right and hence I think people will cut Bush more slack with that hindsight

that's my read on it
