Those actions were all in response to the real problem. The industrial mega-factories had the capacity to generate more goods than the consumers were ready to consume. They could no longer expand sales, so they had to cut costs, ultimately depriving more consumers of purchasing power. It was a feedback mechanism on an industrial scale.

The following is actually very relevant and important to this notion, but you will have to get past it's rhetoric which is a bit dated.
