Hawk, if the USA had been more forceful in backing Britain in the years before Hitler's invasion of Poland etc, rather than waiting until Japan had attacked, he'd have been dissuaded.

I agree..

Roosevelt locked himself into a pledge not to send American boys to fight in foreign wars.

And we had the "America First" movement that fostered American isolationism.

Probably not, as he was a megalomaniac on steroids! But it would have been a good idea and might have saved many millions of people.

And so are people like Osama Bin Laden, as we've seen...

But IMO, Bin Laden is merely the "face" masking the hidden support network of Al-Qaeda sympathizers and financial supporter who include various fundamentalist/militant Islamic clerics.

He could not exist without the religious and political support network that is now scrambling to try and convince the Bush administration that they are moderates and oppose terrorism and militant Islamic Jihad.

Just like Hitler could not have existed without the support of many of Germany's financial and political elite.

I still believe the analogy can be made between Hitler and Bin Laden.. Both are charismatic leaders who know how to "push the buttons" of millions of disgruntled people seeking some new and glorious vision for their futures.

Most of these events in history can be summarized as exercises in personal power, will, and ambition.
