Estimates run in the tens of thousands. Windschuttle makes a pretty good argument against those estimates. Chomsy implied that the numbers are at least as high as 9/11 without any solid backing for such a claim. Chomsky may have explicitly said that "there have been no serious studies" but that didn't stop him from claiming an very high total, and from claiming Human Rights Watch as a source when they did not put out information that supported his statement.
