We don't have a real democracy in the US. I would say it is the genius of our oligarchy to somewhat control those drives- but I don't think we've done it well enough.

In part, but the real beauty of democracy is that all of these factions are forced to convince the people at the polls of the efficacy of their visions.

True democratic institutions will also have viable opposition that is not permitted to be intimidated by the resources of a state security apparatus.

And such democracies, most of all, are accountable every 4-6 years so that the people can change their minds, in case they realize the people they voted for were not what they thought they were.
