It uses the EMP chip(Ericsson, not Sony-Ericsson). I've seen no reports of handoff problems in either regular voice or video calls, in fact, I've heard users say voice performance exceeds that of GSM networks in the UK, though coverage is not yet at that level. Even the most critical "3" bashers praise it, kinda like when I start singing the praises of a new Nokia CDMA phone.

The sentiment change since the launch of the U8110 has been amazing. The reviews are overwhelmingly positive and the consistent theme is that this isnt just a good 3G handset but its features/size/usability make it competitive with the best of the current GSM handsets. The complaints seem to have shifted now towards demanding more content and the ever present problems with customer service (though both of these are improving as well).

The one question I still have is that I havent seen anybody definitively say that the W-CDMA to GSM handoff works. Hutchison seems to have done a pretty good job of aggressively expanding 3G coverage....but this will impact the other 3G operators.

With the current pricing and a raft of new handsets that will be even better than the U8110 in the pipeline, I can guarantee that the other operators in Hutchison's markets are starting to get nervous. I think Europe is going to see some heavy duty price wars in the next 12 months or so.
