The FBI called Kerry a "moderate" after tailing him for a long time in 1971 hoping to catch him doing something radical. He was completely cleared. This after Nixon asked Chuck Colson to "destroy" Kerry by finding out some dirt. They found nothing. In fact they found just the opposite, that he was the real deal in terms of being an honorable veteran who just really wanted to end the war. Nixon ran in 1972 with the promise to end the war. It was the only reason he won the election.
