If you wish to have your heart broken, and you should never, read Jonathan Kozol's Savage Inequalities.

John, this is not a competition over who has more sympathy for kids being raised in bad conditions. It is not useful to make it into one.

My question is why you think that more of the same is going to fix that. Why do you think the racial solution we've been employing all these years will change the condition of those kids? How does assuring racial diversity at Stanford prepare those kids in the ghettos to function effectively in this world? Or even more pointed, how does it accomplish it better than a lot of things we're not doing but could be doing that more directly address the underclass. That's what this is primarily about, the entrenched underclass and its culture and poverty.
