The only way we are going to resolve the race issue is to keep screwing each other until we are all the same color. You've typed that one a lot, Mike, and I have no problem with it. We're definitely not going in that direction, however. My guess is the rate of interracial marriages is going down, particularly as the emphasis on racial and ethnic identity has increased. The only way we are going to resolve the economic difference is to insist assistance programs spend at least as much effort in assisting with job search as they do issuing handouts. I don't have any problem with that one, in principle. But most of the money spent on assistance is not spent on able bodied workers, as the phrase goes. Most is on family support. If you think parents (single mothers and fathers) should leave their children alone in order to work, with not enough money to pay for someone to babysit, then I wouldn't agree with you. As for Cosby, I have no problem with what he said. But I suspect he would be the very first to argue that it's not the only problem and most likely not the most important problem.
