People like JohnM dreamed that forced mixing could change this.

Forced mixing DID change it, to a certain extent. Forced mixing was a tool in the toolbox, a good one. It accomplished what it needed to, which was to familiarize people with those of other races so that they would be sufficiently comfortable in each other's company to not freak out or demonize, so that they could look beyond color and find friendships.

I think we should declare victory and move on to another tool, one more appropriate for the changed scenario. I don't think it helpful to deny in the process the positive effect of the old tool any more than to ignore its negative side effects. We needed that creative destruction to break through our inertia. What's the harm in acknowledging a glass half full even as we say that that tool won't give us the other half?
