So what's your excuse. As for the work observation, if it were only so easy. Kozol's book would be a good place to begin reading to see why it's not. John, The only excuse I have is that I'm always happy when I wake up on the green side of the grass. Try selling that book on the NC A&T University Campus. There, a nearly all minority faculty and student body think they can work their way out of the ghetto. They actually spread the word that it can be done. NC A&T is one of the fastest growing Universities in America and has a student population well over 90% Black. Maybe if they read a few more white man books that explain why they can't succeed by working hard, they will give up this pipe dream. Seems to me the only folks who think blacks cannot work their way to success are white. uw

John, You need pioneers among the poor and especially black to do what Mike wants. And then we all need to give those pioneers full credit for bootstrapping it so others will follow their example. And yes affirmative action has played a role for some in getting themselves further along and i have no problem with tie breaking using AA but without formal quotas and phonying up standards in general. But sadly instead of praising those folks who bootstrap, some call those folks Uncle Toms and bash them for acting white. And the fact is that it's a damn shame and something UW, you and I should be able to agree on before reading Kozol. Mike
