I would expect the French to act as allies when the USA needed them in the same way the UK came to our assistance.
France had lucrative contracts with Saddam Hussein that's why they opposed his ouster.

Yes, that's what I hear a lot of over here. It would make some sense if the French, their companies and/or their gov't were totally dependent on Saddam for their livelihood and were likely to go broke if Saddam disappeared. However, none of that is true. France is a big country and their biz with Saddam was a drop in the bucket.

Is it not possible that the French anticipated the problems we are having in Iraq and did not think it was the right way to go for that and other reasons........echoing the comments made by Gen. Zinni that the proper battlefield for the war on terrorism is not Iraq?

Is also not possible that Bush was so hardheaded and autocratic that he was not willing to entertain other possibilities?

Frankly, if I was France and Bush had said emphatically that its our way or the highway, I'd tell him its the highway. Friends and allies don't talk to each other like that if they respect each other and hope to gain some cooperation. At least that's the way it is in my part of the world.

Compare the integrity of Tony Blair with Chirac. That simple exercise demonstrates the huge cultural differences that have separated the French from Americans & British people. France recently proved that it's more comfortable with Germany than with it's former allies.

Blair has lost the support of his party and his people over his support for Bush's war.

Did you know that Blair has become severely asthmatic during this whole thing? That he needs to have his inhaler by him at all times? Asthma is triggered by excessive stress. Does it sound to you like Blair is someone who is on the right track? It doesn't to me.
