That is the dirty little secret of the US federal income tax system - it's as punitive (relatively) towards the most productive citizens as any European income tax system, with a very small minority of citizens paying the vast majority of total income taxes. The only saving grace for the US is that government spending is a significantly lower percentage of GNP than in most other countries, hence tax rates tend to be lower across all income brackets.
