We have pretty much achieved our goal of world domination since WW2, at least the parts of the world that we care about. Even if we don't actually run other country's governments, that's irrelevant, what's important is that we have troops and economic influence that ensures our domination of a given region.

We have effective control over Latin America through trade pacts, clandestine support for political parties favorable to the U.S., and from time to time military intervention and coups: Guatemala, Brazil, Chile, Panama (I'm sure you remember that attack in 1989). We have effective control over the Middle East oil producing regions via the Gulf War and recent Attack on Iraq, both of which consolidated our control in that region and allowed us to station troops in a region where we were previously unwelcome. We have established a beach head in the central Asian oil producing regions by attacking Afganhastan. We defeated communism in Europe and now have control over that region as well, through our participation in NATO, stationing troops throughout the region, and economic influence.

The only part of the world that we care about, but don't control is Asia, but our trade pacts with that region take care of that little problem. China is free to do as they wish as long as they provide cheap labor and markets for our goods. Plus we have troops in South Korea and Japan just to keep a lid on things.

The fact is, for better or worse, the U.S. has been trying to be the big bully and dominate the world since WW2, and we've been pretty effective in getting our way in the world. What other country can boast of having troops in over 100 countries? If that's not world domination, I don't know what is?!? In fact, the U.S. has done a better job of dominating the world than any other imperial power could ever even come close to acheiving. We would make the imperialist Soviets, Germans, Britains, Japanese, terribly jealous if they could have looked into the future and see how effectively the U.S. would control the world in the future. It hasn't been a silent coup either, blood has been spill like when we attacked Panama and Iraq, but through careful management and strategic planning, we've succeeded in become the new imperial world power. We are in essence an empire. The interesting thing will be to see how the end of the oil age, which is coming in the next 50 years or less, will affect our empire building? Who knows?!?
