That is, the need for a "viable center party" to offset the cuckkoos on the extremes That is, to form that majority coalition, if needed, without the cuckoos being able to "swing the majority" of the "two major parties" (ref that ancient textbook case, "Israel", while italy is more complicated) Note, UK has been very careful to grow that "third party" for 10-15 years, from 3-4% to now 2x%, although all public debate on the "issue" has been banned. (except for some few years in the 80s) Personally I was afraid UK would sink deeper into the "funnies" of their two-party system, with - Blair, great labour militarist and war-mongerer (ie. a good opportunist, always ready) - labour, traditionally not that "war-friendly" as cannon fudder - tories, alweays ready for some war ===== Intersting comment, "the Canadian solution", 2/3 FPT, 1/3 PR: - Germany uses two votes, one for FPTP and one for PR - in Denmark one must select which one to vote with and btw, Sweden, also mentioned as a "stable PR system", is just as funny as 2-party systems. That is. Sweden is using "just" party-lists, and as UK, busy in reforming their ancient system. (although it isn't as ancient as 2-party systems, just from 1886) Funny stuff "European style PR systems" as there are not two european nations having a similar election system.. That is, factors like size of population, percentages of "special areas" and "populations" (minorities) play a significant role. However, all systems are focusing on this "viable center-based-consensus-system", that thing which one "should not talk about"?? Anyway, many thanks, I was kind of sure something would be happening in Canada, despite your "frozen in time" catch-22 2-party gerrymandering neighbour in the south (Mexico is already PR, as most of Latin-south america, if not in practice, at least half way already) Ilmarinen ======= 95% of US voting districts have now been sucessfully computer-optimized and gerrymandered to be "safe districts". Some say it will save a lot of campaign-financing to just campaign in 5% of USA...
