Taiwan trade body probing Applied Materials
Thursday June 10, 10:01 pm ET

SAN FRANCISCO , June 10 (Reuters) - Taiwan's trade regulators are investigating Applied Materials Inc.(NasdaqNM:AMAT - News), the world's largest producer of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, as part of a patent dispute with Korea-based Jusung Engineering Co. Ltd, Applied Materials said on Thursday.

Applied Materials sued Jusung Engineering in December in a Taiwanese court, alleging that Jusung had violated its patents on flat-panel display manufacturing equipment.

In April, the Santa Clara, California-based company was notified that its own flat panel business, AKT Inc., was under investigation by the Taiwan Fair Trade Commission based on a complaint filed by Jusung.

The investigation focuses on whether Applied violated Taiwan trade rules "by allegedly notifying customers about AKT's patent rights and the infringement of those rights by Jusung," Applied Materials said in a quarterly filing with U.S. regulators.

The company said it believes it did not violate the law.

In its own claims against Jusung, Applied Materials won a provisional injunction against Jusung preventing the company from selling certain display manufacturing equipment. Jusung is now fighting to be allowed to post a counterbond that would lift the injunction.
