Not all Pieds Noirs were downtrodden petits blancs (ie "crackers"), there were also grands colons and bourgeois who thrived in the trade between Algeria and metropolitan France... For that matter, check the link below:

As you can see, today's Pieds Noirs indulge in the same boasting as some Jews and insist upon the number of "luminaries", intellectuals, professors, etc, the Pied-Noir community has endowed France with.
