Reagan did indeed use the only defense he could muster -- "plausible deniability" -- and he wore it well as people mainly thought of him as an actor playing the role of a lifetime. He played the role with an ease and charm that made people look past the "collateral damage" of his presidency. The case of treason in the White House we face now is part of a broader and systematic reorientation towards what might most correctly be termed "friendly fascism". In this environment, no effort should be spared to rein in the abuse of power that has become the hallmark of this Administration under the pretext of the "war on terror".
