until recently, I thought you were a man

I make it a practice to append my first name when posting to new people. I noticed that you haven't chosen to use it. Perhaps an oversight on my part.

in your long walk through life in what may have been a frequently hostile environment

My "long walk through life" has been remarkably free of hostility. I have rarely been on the wrong side of it and I'm as mellow as they come. I did once have a gun pointed at me at the airport in Entebbe and I did drive through the angry, milling crowds on Springfield Avenue in Newark just after MLK was killed, but I don't suppose that's what you had in mind. <g>

If you're looking for where my attitude comes from, I suppose it started when in my formative years I came to know prejudice against Catholics and how stupid and wrong and debilitating that was. As a result, I became active in the civil rights movement in college and I have ever since done whatever I could to counter bullying and bigotry. I did experience prejudice as a woman building a career, particularly in management but I thrived anyway and that is just a distant memory. Now I mostly just try to enlighten people whenever I encounter a good segue. There are two groups upon whom it is still socially acceptable in many circles to look down: homosexuals and atheists. I do what I can to enlighten and disabuse.
