In the world of politics, people say one thing in public and do something else in private. In a Kerry Administration, McCain will play a leading role, Secretary of Defence. And then 8 years later he will retire from politics.

When McCain kept going after Bush, his constituents threatened to start a recall campaign. Whether they would succeed or not is a different issue. But the very fact that they would start a campaign against him would have weakened him in the Senate. So he had a tactical withdrawl. It is the same with the Vice Presidency. But once Kerry is President. McCain knows he has nothing to loose and will gladly accept a Administration post. Work at it for the next 8 years. And then retire from politics.
IMO.
