(COMTEX) Fed leaders: rates may climb quickly ( United Press International )

WASHINGTON, Jun 12, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Leaders of
the U.S. central bank are making it clear the Fed may hike interest rates
quicker than expected, the Washington Post reported Saturday.

On Friday two Federal Reserve Bank presidents warned rising inflation may force
them to raise interest rates more rapidly than many investors expect.

Sandra Pianalto, president of Cleveland's federal reserve bank, and Jack Guynn,
president of Atlanta's federal reserve bank, both echoed Chairman Alan
Greenspan's comments earlier in the week that they do not feel bound to raise
rates at a "measured" pace.

That was the word they used slightly more than a month ago, in a statement
issued after their last meeting, to describe the likely course of coming rate
increases.
