It's just that, the type of influence that the military has in our society would lead one to believe that a huge percentage of our population is involved in the military. My comments stemmed from the startling fact that that is not the case at all, it's well less than 1% of the population at any given moment. I guess a better way of quantifying it would be to ask what percentage of Americans ever served in the military in their lifetimes, not just the current snapshot. Even then, it's probably well under 10%. I'm just amazed at what a huge influence this small segment of the population has over our country.

Some countries would have numbers approaching 100%, like Isreal where military service is compulsive.
