<<<So are you saying that the war was primarily about oil?
I agree with you.>>>

Partially about oil, and very important for next several years in regard to our economy which is under severe threats.
But multiple reasons to remove Saddam.

1. Eliminate his threat to the major ME oil producers
like Iran and Saudi Arabia.(which is still the oil argument)
2. Eliminate Saddam as a user or supplier of WMD's to terrorists.
3. Create a vibrant trading economy with 24 mm Iraqis, which over time would be a greater source of dollars than what we would get from any of their oil resources.

4 Improve the lot of the Iraqi citizens.

5.Provide a strong Military presense in the ME which is not threatened by Saddams missile or armaments. Since those have been removed, Qutar and Kuwait are now much safer.

I would not know just where our main bases would be.Turkey and Syria are not much of a threat, I think we will have to leave the Saudis alone. If Iran has learned a lesson from the shock and awe treatment of Saddam they should not cause major problems.
So overall threats should quiet down in the area and we probably wont need so many bases or personnel there.
