We know the poles have shifted before, and that there are reverse anomolies beginning and a rapid decline of the field occurring in the last 300yrs ... Mars has no magnetic field, and lost it perhaps billions of years ago as the core solidified ? The exposure to the solar winds from that thought to have caused the loss of the water and atmosphere once believed to have existed there. They have come up with some pretty interesting theories and models to understand the start-up and dynamics of the life of our own magnetic field , which repels the charged solar particles being thrown out in huge quatities from the sun. By some measurements , it does look as though we are getting ready to do another magnetic pole-flip approaching soon , and they do believe this has happened many times before .But not to worry too much , for the relative short exposure to gamma rays and the solar winds as the poles colapse shouldn't cause too much disturbance or atmosphere loss as they realign themselves again in reverse polarity . Our core is cooling at the rate of 100 degrees every billion yrs , so we should have along ways to go before we lose the field itself entirely . But the lack of a magnetic field to repel the billions of tons of Solar material the Sun throws out in constant eruptions will make quiet an ongoing light show all over the the skies of the earth someday ...and could be quite a light show to be seen everywhere in all skies. Imagine looking up in central park and looking up and seeing this , or down in Miami beach night after night ...very possible some day this will be the case for a brief interval of geologic time:virtual.finland.fi I'm sure many will think it is the second coming of Jesus , magnetism is such a beautiful thing ! ;-)
