Bear in mind that my statement does not account for the human value system, only for the ecological balance. Cutting major blocks of forest on unstable slopes can cause big problems in the short run. Tropical soils are also problematic because they rely on decomposed vegetation almost exclusively (I'm told, and I'm no expert) so if you slash and burn it's a one shot deal. However, after slashing and burning in the tropics, the ecological balance will be perfect for a depauperate soil -- not much of anything will grow there for the average human lifespan. It's all in the perspective.

Mind you, I'm not advocating the rape and pillage system of ethics. I'm only stating that the ecological balance follows the environmental variables.

Does your rule hold true in Haiti? They have major problems.
