PNB Testing CDMA ATMs

CYBERMEDIA NEWS
Monday, June 14, 2004

Punjab National Bank is evaluating CDMA connectivity (from Reliance) for its ATM (automated teller machine) network in India. Following a successful pilot, "We would be rolling this out in about three month's time," said KS Bajwa, IT division GM at Punjab National Bank.

The bank is considering alternate connectivity solutions because VSATs connectivity is relatively more expensive. Also, with Reliance's network reaching remote areas, a major USP for VSAT connectivity has been dented.

CDMA scores on cost at a time when and there is pressure on banks to reduce their running costs while braving competition coming from more technology-savvy banking institutions. All this is driving them to test and deploy technologies like CDMA or GPRS for connectivity.

SBI has already enabled around 100 ATMs with CDMA technology and is planning to increase this figure to over 2,000 over a period of six months.
