In the short run a drop in energy prices will help Bush. :-) (And I also hope they stay at least where they are now.) In the long run, I think the trend will continue to be up, and the price pressures will stimulate the adoption of hybrid vehicles, fuel cell powered buildings, natgas derived from coal, LNG, etc. That would be best IMO because the economic (and political) shock would be less.
