Reading a hospital bill can be an instructive experience. My wife was in the hospital for a week, and the charges were simply astronomical. We found a number of items that were charged but not delivered.

In the private sector, those types of billing practices would lead to charges for fraud. The only reason they get away with it is for the most part we have a third party payor system. The ultimate consumer of the services typically pays no portion or only a small portion of the bill.
