Polls ... Iraq was a bad idea

Poll: Voters Say Iraq Didn't Merit War

LOS ANGELES - A majority of American registered voters now say conditions in Iraq did not merit war, but most are reluctant to abandon efforts there, according to a new Los Angeles Times poll.

Voters are increasingly concerned that Iraq is a quagmire America cannot escape, and they are doubtful that a democratic government will be established there, according to the poll published in Friday editions of the Times.

Fifty-three percent of respondents said the situation in Iraq did not merit war, while 43 percent said war was justified. When the same question was asked for Times polls in March and November, the numbers were precisely reversed.

But less than 20 percent said America should withdraw its troops within weeks, and 25 percent said the U.S. should set a deadline for pulling out.

"I never thought we should go to war in Iraq," said Anne Wardwell, a retired museum curator in Cleveland. "But I think we have to see it through, because if we don't, it is going to be a disaster in the region."

Voters' mounting worries about the war have damaged their confidence in President Bush, the poll showed. Forty-four percent said they approved of Bush's handling of the war, compared to 51 percent in March.

The poll, which was conducted from Saturday to Tuesday, surveyed 1,230 registered voters nationwide. It had a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.

Forty-one percent approved of Bush's handling of the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal, while 37 percent disapproved of his performance.

A majority of voters said presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry has done little to help: The poll found that 34 percent said Kerry has not offered a clear plan to handle the war, while 15 percent said he has. The other voters said they didn't know.

"Bush should had been honest, before the war, about the true costs, and what could realistically be achieved."

He was honest about what he thought the true costs would be. He would not have doomed his own reelection by following what has become a too costly policy for most amercians to support. You predictions are pretty accurate if the situation doesnt turn around in iraq quickly. We are down to the last two lines of defense the CIA supported PM and the tribal leader/President. I am rooting for their success, as unlikely as it seems after the last few days news, and i hope you are as well because your outcome(points 1-4) is not a good one for the USA or in the fight in the WOT. mike

Not a minority, anymore. The country is, finally, coming to my position.

You're certainly not in the minority when it comes to ignoring the repercussions of collusion by France and Russia to prevent Saddam from having to obey the UNSC.

In fact, you could give a sh*t less about the fact that Chirac and Putin were running interference for Saddam so they could salvage those lucrative oil contracts and preserve the viability of the billions of dollars in loans they had extended to his regime. You don't even want to acknowledge their complicity in supporting that brutal regime and undermining the integrity of the UN.

It's, somehow, all the fault of the US. All the corruption, brutality, and intolerance that exists in that region is ALL because of the US policies, past and present. Don't blame anyone else. Don't assign blame and responsibility on a proportional basis to either the local governments or other international actors.

Nope.. just play partisan politics and use it to attack a candidate that you don't like. That's your myopic view of the world. You can't see the forest for the trees.

Well Jacob, you had better get this through your head... Chirac and Putin could care less about this country. They would LOVE to see America's power and prestige take a shellacking so that they could step in and win influence in the region for THEIR OWN AGENDA!!!

And it ain't just Bush, pal.. It will be KERRY as well... They try and use their leverage against Kerry too, should he win. And he will have to make a decision whether he's going to permit the US to subordinate its interests to TotalfinaElf and Lukoil, or stand up for what's right..

Is that what you're goal is? You're willing to see the US go hat in hand to two countries that complicitous in creating this situation in the first place by supporting Saddam in the UN? Are you ready to see the region go to sh*t in a hand-basket for the benefit of French and Russian oil companies??

A good portion of the reason we're there now is because of their lust for Iraqi oil, and I DIRECTLY BLAME them for undermining the stabilization of Iraq by providing a unified UN front to support Saddam's overthrow.

And the oil for food scandal is CLEAR EVIDENCE OF THAT.

But that's an "inconvenient fact" that doesn't support your twisted and myopic view of the world. Now isn't it??

So stuff that in your pipe and smoke it...
