Maximum capacity estimates are there to be broken; TSMC's Fab 6 gives a demonstration

<<The Semiconductor Reporter
June 11, 2004, 12:55 p.m. EDT

HSINCHU, Taiwan -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., which has said that it expects to acheive 105% capacity utilization this quarter, popped a cork today to celebrate its Fab 6 in Tainan Science Industrial Park hitting production levels of 70,000 wafers per month, compared to its planned installed capacity for this quarter of 64,000 per month.

The company also said that 90 days after installing the first tools at its second 300-mm fab, Fab 14 in Tainin, it had acheived high yield production, equalling yields seen at Fab 12 in Hsinchu, a 300-mm fab that has been in operation for over a year.

Fab 6 currently accounts for 16% of TSMC's total wafer capacity, the company said. With Fab 14 ramping up, by the end of 2004, the total capacity of TSMC's fabs in Tainan is expected to increase to 17% of TSMC's total wafer capacity. The figure is expected to reach about 25% by the end of 2005.

Of the 70,000 8-inch wafers produced in May at Fab 6, more than half were manufactured in 0.13-micron process technology. The percentage of wafer output adopting low-k dielectrics has increased significantly, the company said, but it did not give specific numbers.>>

Castellano suggests that chip manufacturers have capacity they are not telling Sicas about in order to claim maxed-out capacity utilization to justify price hikes.

It would be nice if he could give with a reason why he believes this! I guess unsubstantiated conspiracy theories count as valid reporting now.
