They intend on posing as the "nice Westerners" in contrast to the American "bad Westerners". They figure, once the American army is gone from Iraq (2005, they think), they can deal with whoever is running the place.

Nice westerners? They are merely revealing their indifference and unwillingness to expend their resources on trying to resolve some of the long-lasting and corrupt systems they helped to enable during their initial colonial period (in the case of France), or during the cold war when they supplied arms by the shipload to various non-democratic muslim regimes.

But they aren't offering anything of value right now. And I hardly predict (but it's not impossible) that any Iraqi government is going to feel particularly positive towards either France or Russia when it's obvious that both of those nations have attempted to undercut their political legitimacy.

The Russians, anyway, have their hands full trying to hold the ground in Chechnya. And the French are slowly figuring out, that 10% of their population is unassimilable, and the other 90% aren't having any babies. They don't need to look beyond their own borders, for problems to keep themselves busy.

Yes.. the French are reknowned for their myopia and short-sightedness.

Have they ever asked themselves why so many muslims are trying to move to France?

Why is it that there are no similiar opportunities for a properous and content future in the Muslim world?
