Hi DreamWeaver,

It was precisely because of the overlaps, redundancies you cited where I think profits could be squeezed by eliminating them, and, as often happens in situations like this, a good part of the armies it takes to operate them. (I never thought, as an ex-district steward, I'd ever say that. Maybe no one will notice ...)

I held Sprint out for appearances, only, since throwing them into the pot would surely cause antitrust to raise its head far more than if only two were to enter talks, putting the kibosh on such a deal between any of the other three. Three years ago, what I've hypothesized here would have been unthinkable, but today with the RBOCs all entering LD and interstate data services, the once- BIG THREE are no longer the dominating forces they once were in this space. At the same time there are cross-overs taking place, where the IXCs, despite their recent loss in Washington, are moving towards local services, while the locals are going LD. Today, an AT&T merging with MCI should not appear any more obscene than a merger between Bell Atlantic and NYNEX was some years ago, or between PacBell and SWBT, who collectively merged with Ameritech to form the new SBC.

I don't know if doing what I proposed in a hypothetical way above is a good idea or not, btw. Just asking to get some dialog going, and see what falls out.

Thanks for the post, and I note that you've been away from the boards for a while. Welcome back!
