If someone has ruled, that fact does not change whether they call themselves Contras, Reps, Dems, or the Wizard of Oz. Maybe they did not rule as Contras but they were once rulers of Nicaragua.

Reagan used to be a member of the Democratic party. Does that mean that the Dems controled the white house during the 80s? In Reagan's case its partially that he changed his ideology and partially the the Democratic Party changed its positions to ones that he didn't agree with.

A lot of former Iraqi army soldiers are soldiers in the new army, does that mean that Iraq's new army will automatically be a Baathist army?

Or back to the Nazi example. A lot of Nazis had positions of influence before the Nazi take over. Many more had been in the army. That doesn't mean the Nazis ruled Germany in 1930. They likely didn't change their ideology but they joined an organization that pushed that ideology in an extreme way.

Thomas M. said said that "the US army in 2003 is not the same as the US army in 2002" but it is the same organization, not even with a name change. The Contras not only did not have the same name they where not the same organization as Somoza's government. In fact the term "Contras" included people who participated in armed revolution against Somoza.

Just as aside.....you made a very small point that had little to do with the original exchange.

You started us down this direction when you asked about human rights "under the Contras".
