<Now, you tell me if I should feel sorry for Sgt. Mejia when there are literally thousands of other soldiers who have endured the same, or even worse, in wars that had far less political support, or international justification than the current war in Iraq.>

Hawk, everyone is an individual. We all respond differently to different things. What to some people is trivial is to others a horror which can cause them to collapse. I can endure spiders, wetas and stuff crawling on me with indifference [though I'd be careful not to provoke them into biting me, or stinging me]. Others would go nuts. Same for heights. I used to run around barefoot, building scaffolding in the sky, but some people would just faint. They can't help it. They can't be brave. Training would probably help them, but not in all instances.

People aren't clones.

I'm not expressing an opinion on Meija's case as there isn't enough information for me to conclude much. I'm just objecting to your idea that everyone should cope with the same things. That's a reason why conscription is stupid. Conscription is a consequence of the idea that individuals are just chattels of the state and that they are a proletariat mass of clones. That idea shows contempt for people.

His contract of service was perhaps defective. It would be better that he not be paid a "completion of service" bonus for early termination of contract, than to put him in the slammer.
