<<<Hawk, I don't think we really disagree. My point is really just that people are almost religious about the greatness and rightness of democracy as saviour of humanity. I think it's really just less bad than the alternatives, as you [and Churchill] say. >>>

Religeous might mean something mysterious and often discussed, so perhaps Democracy is a form of religion.

We could have Witnesses to write about miracles
and cures. But we would need one man like Mohammed who is above it all because our leaders are all too human and forced to solve earthly problems with the national debt
or business laws or social security.

It is a miracle that our country has survived as long as it has without being invaded. And our medical profession
is performing miracles every day, being able to grow or replace various body parts.

The miracle of our counties survival cannot be attributed to any one man, other than George Washington or the group that wrote the constitution. So we are left with worshipping the Constitution.

As far as saving humanity its an impossible task, with populations growing to exceed the earths productivity.
Even with all of the US resources, preventing self-induced starvation is beyond our capabilities.

We can at best prevent major conflagrations that kill millions at a time. An arsenal of nuclear weapons has been useful to prevent that in recent years.

A writer in the last issue of Scientific American predicts that terrorists will manage to kill a million people- probably through the use of biological weapons.

Much of our governments actions are devoted to postponing that day. Chasing OBL and getting rid of Saddam was a good start.

Until Hong Kong reverted to Chinese rule, it was usually touted as the freest place on earth. In 2001, the Heritage Foundation ranked Hong Kong, Singapore, and New Zealand as 1, 2, and 3 respectively.

North Korea and Iraq were tied for last place.
