One of the interesting ways that scientist have been able to measure the fluctuation state of strength of earth's magnetic fields thru time ...by examining the clay particulates in ancient to modern pottery .

As the potter's hands glide over the moistened clay there are magnetite and iron particles that attempt to allign with the planetary field , and lose the allignment during the firing ...but then regain it with more definition as the vessel cools . Has been a very neat way for them to see the various changes to the earth's field , but surprising discoveries of pottery that has only been thrown in the last 300 yrs suggest a rapid weakening of the pole-fields .

Very neat how they discover these little tricks , and there's going to be some pretty skies above someday,
when the field disappears briefly & poles do reverse.

The only problem with mining on Mars is sending prospectors with enough beer and smokes to get any work done and of course gold would have to be trading at $80,000 USD an ounce to justify the travel costs.

Never underestimate the power of GOLD!

PS: Copper is nice too ... but gold is nicer ,
lets go mining !
