Chris, in my opinion, that is a very sad story.

Sad, because Provance is a decent guy, a gentleman, and he is being made to suffer for it.

Sad, because he had to "rat" on his colleagues, and no-one likes to do that. Certainly not a soldier.

Sad because of what was done, and what is being done, to the Iraqis -- a once proud people.

And sad, because of the level to which prestige of the US military, and indeed the prestige of the US nation, has fallen over pure crap. These were innocent Iraqis going about their lives. There were no secrets to "extract" because they knew nothing. Yet, the orders which these naive "intelligence" personnel received made them into monsters. They had to commit atrocious and barbaric acts -- for nothing. Or perhaps I should say, to satisfy the egos of their superior officers who had received a directive from the "heavens". From W, himself.

>>The torture scandal, it is now clear, extends to the President. He signed the secret post-September 11 directives that created its basis, calculated from the first to evade US and international law. With Defense Secretary Rumsfeld and Attorney General Ashcroft, Bush authorized a secret system of detention for terror suspects that included facilities in Jordan, Afghanistan, and the British territory of Diego Garcia. One of the most telling details about the effort: a private airline was set up to ferry prisoners between destinations on the quiet.

All of the top Bush administration officials, it should thus be underlined, contemplated the act of torture, assented to its use, took concrete official steps to bring it about. <<

Yep, W & Co didn't know about Al Qaeda but they sure knew about torture. And, of course, they will all deny it and find some or other scapegoat to blame. Maybe drag Tenet back and put it on him!
