I believe the high put to call ratio has limited value as a contrarian indicator at this time since the volatility indicators are so low and the bull to bear survey is still showing loads of bulls instead of bears.

If we had that kind of put to call reading with the volatility indicators spiking higher and the bull to bear survey showing more bears than bulls then I would say

BUY AND HOLD ALL YOU CAN AFFORD! Never use margin though.

Here are the long term charts as promised. Judge for yourself how useful the CPC is compared to the volatility indices.

The next post shows other long term charts that may be useful in determining market timing.

Some explanations can be found here on shorter term charts:

I have attempted over the last few years to share what I have learned about technical and indicator analysis with the thread. Unfortunately what the charts show does not always meet with the bullish consensus.

I'm neither a bull nor a bear. I'm a realist. Realistically the market neither falls, nor rises, forever no matter what the fundamental outlook. Fundamental metrics can help with market timing just as technical and indicator analysis can. We all try to buy low and sell high. It's not that easy. I think it's important to be objective. It's important to try to never let your desires for where you want a stock, or market, to move to keep you from realizing there is no reason why it has to do what you hope it will do.

Best of luck with your investments everyone!
