Before the scandal broke, I spoke in person with AF who had just come back. That friend was telling me about the POW treatment, which was not much since they only saw a small part of the initial processing. I don't think they understood the worse parts that were going on, or the attitude toward it would have been different. They told me that they watched some new POWs being fed and watered. What it amounted to was basically a big game of "Simon Says," and if a POW did something like drink water before the command to do so was given, they screamed at him, took the water back, and dragged him away into the back. Back to what, I don't know.

The new POWs were made to sit cross-legged with their foreheads placed on the lower back of the man in front of him. They each got a canteen and an MRE. Together, waiting until the last man finished each step before moving on to the next, they picked up the canteen, opened it, drank, put down the water, pick up item #1, open item #1, eat it, place empty wrapper in specific orientation, drink water, open item #2 ... One miscue, and a couple of guys grab the food and water out of the POWs hand, sometimes throwing it against the wall to emphasize the point, scream, "No! Bad!" in the guy's face at the top of their lungs, and drag him away to the back.

If this had been the only sort of POW abuse going on, then it would be a much different situation, but that friend told me this about a week before the scandal broke. When the news starting picking up the abuse stories it was not a surprise, especially early on.
