There's a demo on my Motorola i730 color-flipper that shows how it works, and you can actually track yourself and somebody else, like a co-worker on a jobsite, etc. It's a web-based option, so it costs extra. If you were in a service area, I think you could use it to get back to camp with your boat as it gives you a map-type display.

I don't use it, so I can't confirm. Obviously, it's not going to be as sophisticated as a Sat-Phone would be; that's high-dollar schmidt.
