well you could say the same thing about the "working poor". Most of the working poor didn't grow up thinking they would only have a career at walmart to look forward to in life, they might have had parents who were employed in the trades or manufacturing or who knows. It isn't any more their fault than it is the elderly's fault for not paying more into the system they are now feeding from. There is no reason to demonize these people, they are not the problem with our system, just an easy scapegoat for the real problem which is corporate and wealthy welfare payouts. It is social security and medicare who will bust our system not some skimpy program for the poor. As it stands I pay more for medicare than my own healthcare, if I could choose I would redirect that money towards the poor because we have a homeless problem out here... instead my medicare money goes to some drug company's shareholders.

The wealthy are paying a higher % simply because of the widening gap between incomes:

census.gov

No one should have to pay taxes on basic living expenses - in fact the tax free deduction could do with being raised from around $7K to something like $12K.

Personally I'd love to pay higher taxes - just send me a check and I'll pass a % of it along.
