I would hate to see Quebec homoginized into US 'culture'.

Louisiana has a partially based Napolenic code law system.

Puerto Rico gets very large welfare transfer payments from the US Government. Too much population, not enough resources, out of most trade routes. Independence would really hurt economically, with no prospect of future recovery in living standards.

Hawaii also gets some payments, and local businesses have various forms of protection. Also way too strategic to the US, Hawaiians will not get any choice of independence.

If Quebec joins the US what about language... this is an OLD opportunity... Quebec bet on the Brits before as the best way to preserve their culture. On the Maritimes ... except for New Brunswick that is a better shot but still very unlikely... New Brunswick ? Language issue also.. Actually the ONLY bilingual province...
